John Peter Zenger
Zenger was born in Germany in 1697. At age thirteen, he and his family immigrated to America. On the ship to America, his father died. In order to support his family, Zenger became an apprentice to William Bradford, a printer.

Zenger married his first wife in 1719, who died shortly after, leaving Zenger with an infant child. In 1722, Zenger married Anna Maulist, whom he would have five more children with. Zenger mostly printed religious papers until he was approached by James Alexander who gave Zenger the opportunity to print the New York Weekly Journal. In the beginning, Zenger printed the journal for the money to support his family, more than to fight Cosby. |
